Aloha, we moved to the Big Island of Hawaii 9 years ago looking for an adventure of a lifetime. Leaving our successful jobs and good life in Tennnessee, needless to say, our friends and family thought we were crazy! We had no idea how we were going to be able to afford to stay longterm on the island, but we had faith we would figure it out. Soon realizing how difficult it is to find work here, we worked odd jobs our first year, then one of us started working at a macadamia nut processing plant full time. After a while we began to wonder how this big, beautiful, rich and buttery nut would taste in the family’s century-old peanut brittle recipe. As we made the first batch of macadamia nut brittle and poured out the molten candy, it began to bubble and slowly cover the pan. Looking like a lava flow as it moved, we finally tasted it after cooling. Amazed at how much different and (WAY) better it tasted with macadamia nuts, we immediately said, “Bet we can sell this and call it Big Island Lava Candy!” We had just started beekeeping a few months earlier after a friend caught us a wild bee swarm, so we tried adding our honey to the recipe and it got even better! We began by giving it to friends, asking them for feedback and everyone was like, “Yes, I would pay money for this delicious macnut brittle!” So excited, we began the process of creating our very own candy business! We started selling it at local farmer’s markets in March 2016, and now three years later we are being sold in 9 different businesses around the island. Thankful for our success and now job security, we can stay and enjoy the simple, slow-paced, beautiful island life. As long as Pele lets us that is... last year’s volcanic eruption was so large and quite traumatic for our island. But, that’s part of the magic here, constant creation and change in one of the most beautiful places on this Earth. We have worked very hard to be where we are now and a day does not pass without acknowledging how very blessed we are.
It started with Big Grandma’s (our great great grandmother!) peanut brittle recipe from Arkansas that is over 100 years old.
